Residual value
The proposed final payment must be supportable against a cautious view of future asset value; it is not a guaranteed sale price.
Direct answer: A balloon payment can be suitable for machinery where the asset is expected to retain an acceptable value and the business has a credible plan for the final payment. It reduces regular repayments by deferring part of the balance, but does not remove that debt.
The lender considers the machine’s age at the end of the term, expected hours, condition, maintenance, market demand, useful life, and likely resale route. Specialist or fast-changing equipment may support a lower balloon or none at all.
The proposed final payment must be supportable against a cautious view of future asset value; it is not a guaranteed sale price.
Heavy utilisation, poor maintenance, obsolescence, or a limited secondary market can weaken expected value.
The business should understand whether it expects to pay the balloon from cash, refinance subject to approval, or sell the machine.
A balloon is commonly attached to an ownership-focused finance structure. It lowers regular repayments compared with spreading the same balance fully across the term, while increasing the amount due at the end.
If the machine is worth less than expected, sale proceeds may not cover the balloon. Refinancing is not guaranteed and will depend on future circumstances and lender criteria. The final payment remains contractually due.
