The short answer
VAT treatment depends on whether the car is purchased or hired, whether it is available for private use, and whether a valid VAT invoice is issued or the car is sold under the margin scheme. In many director car situations, VAT on purchase cannot be reclaimed.
Buying a car
VAT on the purchase of a car is generally blocked if the car is available for private use. Limited exceptions exist, for example certain vehicles used wholly for a qualifying business purpose. A margin scheme used car has no reclaimable VAT at all.
Leasing or contract hire
Where a car is leased and there is some private use, a VAT-registered business can often reclaim part of the VAT on the rental under HMRC rules, while VAT on separately identified maintenance may be treated differently.
Fuel and running costs
VAT on fuel and repairs has its own rules, including fuel scale charges where private fuel is provided. Check HMRC guidance or your accountant.
Limitations and eligibility
- VAT is complex; this page does not cover every exception.
- Recovery depends on VAT registration and actual use.
- Always check the invoice type before assuming VAT is reclaimable.
