Roadworks, utilities and events

Asset finance for traffic management companies

For traffic management contractors and equipment hire businesses working on roadworks, utility schemes and events. We help you match long-lived vehicles and signal systems to hire purchase or finance lease, and expansion costs to the right kind of loan.

Who this is for

Traffic management sits between the highway authority, the principal contractor and the public. Your fleet, signals and people are central to delivery. Businesses in this sector range from operators running a few crews for utility street works to equipment hire businesses supplying signals and signage to other contractors and event organisers.

Lenders want to understand which side of that line you sit on, because self-delivery and hire-out create different risks. If you hire or sub-hire equipment to others, tell us early: many agreements need the lender's permission for that.

  • Roadworks and highway maintenance contractors
  • Utility and street works support crews
  • Event and temporary closure specialists
  • Signal and equipment hire businesses
  • Firms entering new frameworks or regions
  • Operators replacing ageing fleet

Match the funding to what you are buying

Hire purchase spreads the cost of an asset you intend to keep. Ownership passes only after all required payments and any option-to-purchase fee are made. A finance lease gives you use of the asset for rentals while the funder keeps ownership; there is no automatic transfer of title at the end, and end-of-term options depend on the agreement.

Where you already own vehicles or equipment, asset refinance may release value, subject to valuation, ownership and settlement of any existing finance. Where you have issued eligible business-to-business invoices, invoice finance may help bridge payment terms. Business loans can cover wider expansion costs, but may themselves require security or a personal guarantee.

How lenders read a traffic management business

Utilisation and off-hire

Signals and vehicles earn only when deployed. Lenders look at how often kit is out on jobs and what happens to repayments when it sits in the yard. Payments continue whether the asset is working or not.

Weather and contract uncertainty

Programmes slip, schemes are cancelled and winter work patterns differ. A credible forecast shows how you would cover repayments through a quiet quarter.

Payment lags

Long payment terms from principal contractors can stretch cash. Expect lenders to ask about debtor days and how you fund wages before you are paid.

Frameworks are not guaranteed work

A framework place shows capability, but call-offs are not guaranteed. Lenders give more weight to orders, history and spread of customers than to framework entry alone.

Costs and risks to weigh honestly

  • Repayments are fixed commitments; they do not pause when units are off-hire or contracts end.
  • Hire purchase and finance lease are usually secured on the asset, and lenders may ask for a personal guarantee from directors.
  • Maintenance, insurance and servicing are not necessarily included in the agreement and must be budgeted separately.
  • Deposits, fees, VAT treatment and early settlement terms vary by lender and agreement.
  • Over-committing on fleet ahead of confirmed work can strain cash if a scheme is delayed.

Sorbus Finance is a broker, not a lender, and works with a selected panel of lenders rather than the whole market. Costs, deposits and any guarantee or security depend on the proposal and agreement. Ask for a written breakdown of lender and any broker fees. VAT and tax treatment depend on the structure and your business circumstances; speak to your accountant.

Frequently asked questions

What finance suits traffic management vehicles and signals?+

Long-lived assets such as TM-spec vehicles and portable signal systems are commonly funded through hire purchase or finance lease, subject to lender assessment. Hire purchase can lead to ownership after all required payments and any option fee; a finance lease does not transfer ownership automatically.

Can asset finance pay for recruitment or a new depot?+

Asset finance is generally linked to identifiable equipment, not recruitment, rent or other day-to-day spending. Some depot equipment or fit-out assets may be eligible. A business loan may be more suitable for wider set-up, training and mobilisation costs, subject to lender assessment.

Does winning a framework make finance easier to get?+

It can help show capability, but a framework place does not guarantee work. Lenders tend to look at trading history, confirmed orders, customer spread and cash flow rather than framework entry on its own.

Can I hire my financed signals out to other contractors?+

Only if the lender agrees. Many agreements restrict hiring or sub-hiring the asset to third parties, so tell us at the outset if that is part of your business model.

Do repayments stop if equipment is off-hire?+

No. Repayments continue on the agreed schedule regardless of utilisation, weather or contract delays, which is why lenders look closely at how you would cover quieter periods.

Is Sorbus Finance a lender?+

No. Sorbus Finance is a broker that introduces businesses to a selected panel of lenders, not the whole market. Any offer, rate and condition is set by the lender following its own assessment.
