Automated production line and packaging machinery finance
Production line finance can help a manufacturer spread eligible equipment costs across a coordinated installation. Packaging lines may combine filling, wrapping, conveyors and end-of-line handling from several suppliers. Sorbus can discuss how identifiable machinery and payment milestones could be presented to suitable lenders; design work, installation and commissioning are not automatically financeable.
Request a conversationPurchase price and total funding requirement
Complete line prices depend on throughput, product handling, hygiene specification, inspection and controls integration. Yorkshire Packaging Systems describes machinery, installation, commissioning and training, illustrating why a line is more than one machine. A project-specific quote is needed rather than an unsupported category-wide price range. Distinguish equipment, software, site works, VAT and deposits, especially if suppliers invoice at different stages.
Indicative only. Deposits, terms and structures depend on the asset, the business and funder criteria.
Before you commit to a supplier
- Prepare a component schedule identifying manufacturers, serialisable equipment, supplier quotations and who integrates the line.
- Map order deposits, factory acceptance, delivery, site acceptance and retention payments. Ask what a lender will fund at each milestone.
- Show realistic line throughput and margins, including cleaning, changeovers, training and planned downtime during commissioning.
- Document responsibility for overall performance, warranty, interface failures and delays. Several supplier warranties do not automatically create one turnkey guarantee.
What lenders may ask about your business
Prepare filed and current management accounts, bank statements, cash-flow forecasts, existing commitments and the proposed deposit. Time trading, performance, credit history, asset valuation, supplier credentials and the commercial purpose all affect assessment. A recently established business may have fewer options. Criteria differ: neither approval, a particular term nor a rate is guaranteed. The amount financed can differ from the purchase price after VAT, trade-in settlement, deposits and costs the lender does not accept.
Financing a used automated production line and packaging machinery finance
A used packaging machine can be considered, but an assembled second-hand line needs a compatibility assessment. Controls, guarding, hygiene suitability, spare parts and manufacturer support may determine whether it is a workable system. Obtain inspection and reinstallation quotations; the lender may value individual components differently from the installed project total.
An illustrative example
Hypothetical example: a food manufacturer adds an automatic wrapper, conveyor and pallet-handling stage. It documents the current bottleneck, a realistic production trial and a phased shutdown plan. The supplier separates equipment from integration labour. Funding may need different drawdowns or the business’s own cash for deposits and site works; there is no assumed whole-project approval.
Hypothetical scenario for illustration, not a real client or a quote.
Common finance options
- Hire purchase
- You pay instalments and title normally passes to the business only once all contractual payments, and any option-to-purchase fee, have been paid.
- Finance lease
- The funder owns the asset and you rent it for the agreed term. There is no automatic transfer of ownership; end-of-term options depend on the agreement.
- Operating lease
- Only possible where a funder will take a residual value view on the asset. Return conditions, hours or usage limits usually apply.
- Refinance / sale and HP back
- Releasing capital from equipment you already own may be considered, subject to valuation and the funder's criteria.

Questions about automated production line and packaging machinery finance
Can several production machines be funded together?+
Potentially. List each machine, supplier and acceptance milestone. A lender may use one package or separate agreements depending on title, delivery and risk.
Can finance cover installation and commissioning?+
Some related costs may be considered, but do not assume all integration, labour or building work qualifies. An itemised quotation is essential.
Can a lender release money before the line works?+
Only under an agreed arrangement. Supplier deposits and work in progress create risks that need assessment before the purchase contract is signed.
Can used packaging equipment be financed?+
It may be considered if condition, valuation, support and integration are satisfactory. A machine being operational elsewhere does not prove suitability for your product.
What documents support a production line enquiry?+
Share supplier quotes, the line layout, payment schedule, accounts, cash-flow forecast and the commercial case. Identify any confirmed orders separately from anticipated sales.
Will automation savings guarantee lender approval?+
No. Forecast savings need supporting assumptions and the business must remain able to service the debt. Lenders assess the applicant and equipment, not just a supplier ROI estimate.
