The Growth Guarantee Scheme can help eligible UK businesses access finance through accredited lenders. It is not a grant, not automatic approval and not a promise of the lowest rate. Your business must still be viable and able to afford the borrowing.

You have a plan for the business. Perhaps that means a second site, new machinery or enough working capital to take on a larger contract.

Then someone mentions a government-backed loan. It sounds reassuring. But what, exactly, is backed? And does your business qualify?

Those are the right questions. The useful starting point is your plan, not the scheme badge.

What is the Growth Guarantee Scheme?

The Growth Guarantee Scheme, usually shortened to GGS, is administered by the British Business Bank. Finance is provided by accredited lenders, not paid directly to you by the government.

It supports products including term loans, overdrafts, asset finance, invoice finance and asset-based lending. Not every accredited lender offers every product.

The government-backed guarantee covers 70% of the lender’s eligible outstanding exposure after the normal recovery process. Your business remains liable for 100% of its debt. That distinction matters much more than the label on the application.

What are the current GGS eligibility rules?

Start with the British Business Bank’s current scheme page and the accredited lender’s written criteria. The main questions are whether your business trades in the UK, meets the group turnover limit, has a viable proposition and can afford additional debt.

For most businesses, more than 50% of income must come from trading activity. There are specific exemptions. Relevant insolvency proceedings and subsidy limits can also affect eligibility.

At our source check on 12 October 2026, the Bank’s page distinguishes its existing operational terms from enhancements announced on 12 July 2026. It lists an existing turnover limit of £45 million and term loans and asset finance up to six years, alongside announced increases to £54 million and up to ten years that lenders are working to operationalise.

Do not assume an announced change is already available from your chosen lender. Ask which rules apply to the facility being offered and keep the written confirmation with your application.

Under the existing published terms, facilities can generally be up to £2 million per business group outside the scope of the Northern Ireland Protocol, now understood through the Windsor Framework. Different caps can apply to businesses within scope and to certain sectors. Group structure and prior borrowing matter.

Does a government guarantee mean easier approval?

It may help a lender consider a viable business it would not otherwise support. It does not remove underwriting.

A lender still needs to understand turnover, profitability, cash generation, existing debt and what the new finance will achieve. It undertakes credit and fraud checks. It can decline an application.

Imagine an engineering firm taking on a profitable contract that needs extra equipment. That is a different proposition from borrowing to cover repeated losses without a workable recovery plan. Both businesses need cash. Only one may have a convincing route to repayment.

This is an illustrative comparison, not a Sorbus client case study.

Can you get GGS with an existing Bounce Back Loan?

Previous BBLS, CBILS, CLBILS or eligible Recovery Loan Scheme borrowing does not automatically exclude you. It may reduce the amount available, and lenders need to consider your whole repayment position.

Prepare a schedule showing the balance, monthly payment and remaining term of every facility. Include overdrafts and hire purchase, not just the loan that happens to be on your mind.

A new loan is affordable only if the combined commitments are affordable. A scheme cannot change that arithmetic.

Will you need a personal guarantee?

Possibly. Personal guarantees are at the lender’s discretion under its normal commercial lending practices. Principal Private Residences cannot be taken as security within GGS.

That is not the same as saying there is no personal risk. Before signing, ask whether the guarantee is capped, when it can be called and what legal liability it creates. Take independent legal advice rather than relying on a reassuring headline.

How to apply for the Growth Guarantee Scheme

  1. Define the purpose. Set out what the finance will buy or support, how much is needed and why the timing matters.
  2. Check suitability. A loan is not always the right structure. Equipment may suit asset finance; unpaid business invoices may suit invoice finance.
  3. Prepare evidence. Gather accounts, current management figures, bank statements, a debt schedule and a cash-flow forecast. Document group ownership and previous subsidy support.
  4. Confirm the lender’s live criteria. Check accreditation, product availability and which 2026 enhancements are operational.
  5. Compare written offers. Look at total repayments, fees, term, security, guarantees, early settlement and any conditions before money is released.

Is GGS always better than a normal business loan?

No. The British Business Bank says that if a lender can offer a commercial loan on better terms, it will do so. Interest and fees vary with the proposal.

Its 2026 finance markets report also describes a wider landscape of challenger banks, specialists and non-bank providers. That makes a proper comparison more useful than simply asking for the scheme by name.

The better question is: which structure helps us reach this goal without creating avoidable pressure later?
