Dental imaging and digital equipment finance
Imaging units, scanners, milling machines and 3D printers often come bundled with software, licences, training and integration work. That mix affects what a lender will fund and what you will keep paying after installation. This page helps you separate the two.

Hardware, software and the grey area between
Lenders generally look most favourably on equipment they could identify, recover and resell. An imaging unit or a milling machine meets that test more easily than a software licence, which may be non-transferable and worthless outside your practice. Many digital systems are sold as a package, so ask the supplier to show hardware, perpetual licences, subscriptions, training and installation on separate lines.
Some suppliers offer their own subscription or rental arrangements. These can be convenient but may combine equipment, software and support in ways that are hard to compare. Line up the total payable over the period you expect to use the system, what happens at renewal, and what you would lose if the subscription stopped.

Installation, radiation advice and compatibility
Ionising radiation equipment brings installation and safety obligations that sit with the practice. Before committing, take appropriate advice from your supplier and a suitably qualified radiation protection adviser on room suitability, shielding and any notification or testing needed. Any room or shielding works are fit-out costs that a lender may treat differently from the unit itself, and delays here can push back the date you can start using equipment you are already paying for.
Compatibility matters as much as specification. Check that new imaging software works with your practice management system, existing sensors and computers, and that scanners export to the laboratories you use. Integration problems can add cost and downtime after the agreement has started.
Utilisation is the real test
A CBCT unit or chairside milling system can broaden what a practice offers, but it does not create demand on its own. Consider who will use it, how often, whether clinicians need training first, and how many referrals or laboratory costs it might realistically replace. If the business case depends on optimistic case numbers, model a slower ramp-up before deciding on the repayment profile.
Questions that shape an imaging decision
What is the true monthly cost?
Add finance repayments, software subscriptions, support contracts, calibration and consumables. The equipment payment may be only part of the ongoing commitment.
How quickly will technology move on?
Digital kit can date faster than a chair. Match the term to the period you realistically expect to use the system, and understand early settlement and upgrade terms.
Who carries the room works?
Shielding, electrics and data cabling may be fit-out. See our practice fit-out and technology finance service or the expansion loans guide.
Is supplier finance comparable?
Supplier packages can bundle support and software. Compare total cost and terms against independent equipment finance before deciding.
Costs and risks to weigh
- If payments are missed, a lender with ownership or security can recover the hardware, while software subscriptions may continue to be owed separately.
- Personal guarantees may be requested and can make directors or partners personally liable.
- Early settlement charges may apply, and digital equipment can lose resale value quickly.
- Recurring licences and support are not necessarily covered by the finance agreement.
- Installation or radiation-related delays can mean paying before the equipment is usable.
Sorbus Finance is a broker, not a lender, and works with a selected panel of lenders rather than the whole market. Any offer, cost, deposit, security or guarantee requirement depends on the lender's assessment and the agreement itself. Ask for a written breakdown of lender charges and any broker fee. VAT and tax treatment depend on your business circumstances and structure; take advice from your accountant.

hello@sorbusfinance.co.ukFrequently asked questions
Can a CBCT or OPG unit be financed?+
Often, as identifiable equipment, though each lender assesses the practice and the quote. Room works and shielding may be treated as fit-out rather than equipment.
Can software licences be included in dental equipment finance?+
Sometimes, but not automatically. Some lenders will include certain licences bundled with hardware; others will not. Recurring subscriptions are usually a separate cost.
Do I need radiation advice before installing dental imaging?+
You should take appropriate advice from your supplier and a suitably qualified radiation protection adviser on installation and safety requirements before committing. Finance approval does not certify compliance or transfer those responsibilities.
Is supplier subscription better than hire purchase for a scanner?+
It depends on total cost, flexibility and what you want at the end. Compare the full amount payable and renewal terms. Hire purchase leads to ownership only after all payments and any option fee.
Will a new intraoral scanner bring more patients?+
Not automatically. It may improve workflow, but demand depends on your patients, services and clinicians. Plan repayments on realistic use.
Can I reclaim VAT on digital equipment?+
That depends on your business structure and circumstances, including the exempt and taxable services you provide. Check with your accountant.
