Landscaping vehicle and machinery finance: tippers, trailers and diggers

Landscaping work is won project by project and moved site to site. The vehicle, the body on it, the trailer behind it and the machine on the trailer all have to work together, and so does the way you fund them.

Chassis, conversion and the whole working unit

Many landscaping vehicles start as a standard chassis cab and are fitted with a tipper body, dropside, cage or tool storage by a converter. That means two suppliers, two invoices and sometimes two delivery dates. Lenders will usually want to see both clearly, and some will consider the conversion within the same agreement while others treat it differently. There is no universal rule.

Ask for a single specification that covers the base vehicle, body, tail lift or tipping gear, racking, towbar and any lighting or signage. That makes it easier to compare like for like and avoids discovering a gap between what the dealer is supplying and what the converter is fitting.

  • Tipper and dropside chassis cabs
  • Crew-cab vans with tool storage
  • Plant and flatbed trailers
  • Mini and midi excavators
  • Tracked and wheeled dumpers
  • Compact track loaders and attachments

Payload, towing and licence checks come first

A tipper loaded with spoil, a trailer carrying a mini digger and a crew in the cab can quickly reach weight limits. Check the vehicle's gross weight and payload after conversion, the trailer's rating, the towing capacity and the licence entitlement your drivers hold. Finance does not confirm that a combination is road legal, and a lender approving a vehicle tells you nothing about whether it can legally tow your machine.

Getting this wrong can leave you paying for a vehicle that cannot do the job it was bought for. Speak to the dealer, converter and, where needed, a transport adviser before you sign anything.

Excavators, dumpers and when to hire instead

A mini excavator can transform a landscaping crew's productivity on patios, drainage, footings and garden clearances. If you have a steady pipeline of groundworks, owning one through hire purchase may make sense; ownership normally passes after all required payments and any option fee. If digger work is occasional, plant hire may be cheaper and avoids a fixed monthly commitment. Our excavator finance page covers the machine side in more depth.

Used plant is common in landscaping. Whether a lender will consider a particular used excavator or dumper depends on its age, hours, condition and seller.

Decision guidance

Getting a landscaping vehicle or machine decision right

01

Specify the full working setup

Write down what the vehicle must carry and tow on a typical day. Use that to check the chassis, body, trailer and machine fit together before you request finance.

02

Look at your project pipeline honestly

Staged payments and retentions on larger jobs mean cash arrives unevenly. Make sure repayments still work if a project slips because of weather or a client delay.

03

Compare owning against hiring

For plant used a few weeks a year, hire may be better. For vehicles used every day, ownership or leasing usually makes more sense.

04

Plan running costs separately

Insurance, tax, servicing, tyres, tracking and breakdown cover are usually your responsibility and are not necessarily included in finance.

Costs and risks to weigh

  • The total repayable exceeds the cash price, and conversion costs add to the amount financed.
  • If payments are missed, the lender may repossess the vehicle or machine and call on any guarantee.
  • A vehicle that is overweight once loaded or cannot tow your plant still has to be paid for.
  • Early settlement may carry charges; check how they are worked out.
  • Used plant and converted vehicles may attract more cautious lender appetite, decided case by case.
  • Expected projects and quotes are not guaranteed income.

Sorbus Finance is a broker, not a lender, and works with a selected panel of lenders rather than the whole market. Any offer, cost, deposit, security or guarantee requirement depends on the lender's assessment and the agreement itself. Ask for a written breakdown of lender charges and any broker fee. VAT and tax treatment depend on your business circumstances and structure; take advice from your accountant.

Frequently asked questions

Can a tipper body conversion be financed with the vehicle?+

Some lenders will consider the chassis and conversion together; others treat them separately. Ask both suppliers for clear, itemised quotes so the lender can assess each part.

Does finance approval mean my trailer and digger combination is legal?+

No. Finance does not check weights, towing limits, licence entitlement or road legality. Confirm these with the dealer, converter or a transport adviser.

Can I finance a used mini excavator?+

Possibly. Lenders assess used plant on its age, hours, condition and supplier, so appetite varies case by case.

Should I hire or buy an excavator for landscaping?+

If you need one most weeks, ownership through hire purchase may make sense. If digger work is occasional, hire may cost less overall and avoids a fixed commitment.

Can I fund vans, trailers and a digger together?+

It may be possible to arrange several assets at once, but lenders differ. Separate agreements are also common. Itemised quotes make either approach easier.

Who decides the VAT treatment on a landscaping vehicle?+

Not the lender. VAT depends on your business, the vehicle type and the agreement structure. Ask your accountant.
