Veterinary diagnostic imaging finance
Digital radiography, ultrasound and CT bring different installation needs, software arrangements and staffing questions. This guide covers funding for veterinary imaging systems, the costs beyond the hardware and what to check before committing.

Imaging equipment lenders commonly see
Imaging systems are usually identifiable, serial-numbered equipment, which helps a lender describe and secure them. Large installations such as CT may involve significant site works, and a lender will want to understand which elements are removable equipment and which become part of the building.
Many systems are sold with viewing software, image storage or cloud reporting packages. Ask for hardware, licences, subscriptions, training and installation to be shown separately so each can be assessed. Some lenders will consider certain bundled software; others fund hardware only.

Installation, radiation advice and premises
X-ray and CT equipment bring radiation safety obligations that remain with the practice. Before ordering, take appropriate advice from the supplier and a suitably qualified radiation protection adviser on room design, shielding and any registration, notification or testing involved. Delays in this stage can push back go-live while repayments may already have started, so line up timings with your supplier and lender.
If works are needed, check landlord consent and whether shielding, electrics or air conditioning are part of the quote. These are typically fit-out items, which may suit a separate funding route.
Make the case on realistic caseload
In-house imaging may reduce referrals out or speed up diagnosis, but owning a scanner does not by itself bring in more clients. Think about who will operate and interpret images, whether additional training or reporting services are needed, and how many cases you can realistically expect. Compare upgrading, buying used, or continuing to refer, before settling on a repayment profile.
Before you choose an imaging system
Whole-life cost, not list price
Include service contracts, tube or probe replacement terms, software and reporting fees, calibration and downtime. These continue whatever your caseload.
New, ex-demo or used?
Used imaging can cost less but may have shorter support windows. Some lenders consider used kit where age, condition and support are clear.
Term versus useful life
Match the agreement length to the period you expect to use the system. Understand early settlement if you upgrade sooner.

Costs and risks to weigh
- Missed payments can lead to repossession of equipment the lender owns or holds security over, and further costs.
- Directors or partners may be asked for personal guarantees, which can put personal assets at risk.
- Early settlement may carry charges, and imaging technology can lose resale value.
- Service, software and reporting costs are not necessarily included in the finance agreement.
- Installation or radiation-related delays can mean paying before the equipment is in use.
Sorbus Finance is a broker, not a lender, and works with a selected panel of lenders rather than the whole market. Any offer, cost, deposit, security or guarantee requirement depends on the lender's assessment and the agreement itself. Ask for a written breakdown of lender charges and any broker fee. VAT and tax treatment depend on your business circumstances and structure; take advice from your accountant.

hello@sorbusfinance.co.ukFrequently asked questions
Can veterinary CT be financed?+
It can be, as identifiable equipment, subject to lender assessment. Site works for a CT room are usually fit-out and may need a separate route.
Do I need radiation advice before installing veterinary X-ray?+
You should take appropriate advice from your supplier and a suitably qualified radiation protection adviser on installation and safety before committing. Finance approval does not certify compliance or transfer those responsibilities.
Can PACS or reporting subscriptions be financed?+
Not automatically. Some lenders include certain software with hardware; recurring subscriptions are usually separate ongoing costs.
Will imaging equipment increase my caseload?+
Not by itself. It may help retain cases you would otherwise refer, but plan repayments on realistic use.
Can used ultrasound or DR equipment be funded?+
Some lenders consider used equipment where its age, condition and support arrangements are clear. Others may decline or ask for more security.
Does finance approval confirm Practice Standards Scheme accreditation?+
No. The RCVS scheme is voluntary and assessed separately; funding equipment does not award any accreditation.
