Food production finance

Food processing equipment finance

Mixers, cookers, ovens, slicers, grinders and preparation machinery: how to fund processing plant without losing sight of installation, hygiene design and total cost.

What usually falls under processing equipment

In practice this means the machines that change raw ingredients into product: planetary and spiral mixers, bowl choppers, mincers, tumblers, kettles and cook tanks, ovens and fryers on production lines, slicers, depositors and forming equipment. Ancillary kit such as wash systems, tray racks and weighing equipment may sit alongside.

Lenders generally look most favourably at equipment that is identifiable, removable and has a second-hand market. Highly bespoke equipment built into your building, or machines whose value depends on a specific product, can be harder to fund on the asset alone and may call for additional security or a different structure.

Choosing between hire purchase, lease and loan

Hire purchase suits businesses that want to own the machine at the end, with ownership passing after all required payments and any option fee. A finance lease lets you use equipment for an agreed period without automatic ownership, which some businesses prefer for kit they expect to upgrade. Neither structure carries a blanket tax advantage; your accountant should advise on how each fits your accounts and VAT position.

If the project is mostly building works, drainage, flooring or utility upgrades rather than machinery, a business loan may be the more realistic route. Loans can require security and personal guarantees too, and lenders will consider your existing borrowing alongside the new commitment.

  • New or used, with age and service history
  • Installation and services connection costs
  • Commissioning, validation runs and training
  • Spare parts and tooling packages
  • Software or control licences, if any

Hygiene design and cleanability are your call

Buyers often weigh how easily a machine can be stripped, cleaned and inspected, as well as throughput. Ask suppliers how their equipment is designed for cleaning, what commissioning they provide and what documentation comes with it. A lender assesses the credit and the asset; it does not review whether the design suits your hygiene plan or your registration or approval conditions. Confirm those with your own technical team and your local authority.

Decision guidance

Decide what to fund before you decide how

01

Upgrade, replace or retain

Compare a new machine against refurbishing your current one or hiring short term. If existing kit is owned outright, asset refinance against it may be an alternative worth considering.

02

Itemise the quote

Ask the supplier to separate the machine, delivery, installation, commissioning, training and consumables. Inclusion of each element is lender-specific, not automatic.

03

Plan for downtime

Installation can interrupt production. Build changeover time and a slower ramp-up into your forecast, because repayments typically start regardless.

04

Check site readiness

Power, water, drainage, extraction and floor loading can all affect cost and timing. Lease terms on rented premises may also require landlord consent for installation.

Costs and risks to weigh

  • The equipment is security for the agreement and may be repossessed if payments are missed; personal guarantees may also be requested.
  • Total amount payable over the term can be significantly higher than the cash price once interest and fees are included.
  • Settling early may involve charges; ask how any settlement figure is calculated before signing.
  • Maintenance, breakdown cover, insurance and cleaning chemicals are not necessarily part of the agreement.
  • A new machine does not guarantee output, product quality or new orders.
  • Used equipment appetite varies by lender and asset; some may decline older or highly specialised kit.

Sorbus Finance is a broker, not a lender, and works with a selected panel of lenders rather than the whole market. Any offer, cost, deposit, security or guarantee requirement depends on the lender's assessment and the agreement itself. Ask for a written breakdown of lender charges and any broker fee. VAT and tax treatment depend on your business circumstances and structure; take advice from your accountant.

Frequently asked questions

Can installation and commissioning be financed with the machine?+

Sometimes, but not automatically. Some lenders include reasonable installation within an equipment package; others treat it separately. Itemised quotes make the conversation clearer.

Will a lender check the machine is hygienic or compliant?+

No. Lenders assess the credit and the asset value. Suitability for your process and compliance with food law remain your responsibility, alongside advice from your supplier and local authority.

Is hire purchase better than leasing for processing kit?+

It depends on whether you want ownership, how long you expect to keep the machine and your accounting position. Hire purchase leads to ownership after all payments and any option fee; a finance lease does not.

Can I finance second-hand processing equipment?+

Lender appetite for used machines is case-specific. Age, condition, provenance and whether the seller is a dealer or private party all matter.

What if the machine is built into the building?+

Equipment that is hard to remove may carry less security value. A lender may ask for additional security or suggest a loan instead.

Can I reclaim VAT on financed equipment?+

VAT depends on your registration, the type of agreement and your circumstances. Speak to your accountant; the lender does not determine your VAT position.
