Depots, people and mobilisation
Business loans for traffic management expansion
Expansion can create costs before new work generates cash: setting up a depot, recruiting and training operatives, mobilising crews and waiting for customers to pay. A business loan may help fund these wider costs, subject to affordability and lender assessment.
What expansion loans typically cover
Asset finance is generally linked to identifiable equipment, rather than wages, rent and general overheads. An expansion loan may cover these wider costs. Compare asset finance separately for vehicles, signals and eligible depot equipment rather than assuming one loan is the best way to fund everything.
- New or larger depot and yard set-up
- Recruitment of operatives and supervisors
- Training and accreditation costs
- Mobilisation for a new contract or region
- Cash gap before invoices are paid
- IT, welfare and site set-up
Secured, unsecured and guarantees
An unsecured business loan is not secured against a specific business asset, but lenders may still ask directors for a personal guarantee. That can make you personally liable if the business cannot repay. A secured loan takes security over property or other assets, which can be at risk if repayments are missed.
Understand exactly what you are guaranteeing or charging before you sign, and take independent advice if you are unsure.
Build a plan a lender can believe
Forecast the downside
Show cash flow if the new contract starts late, volumes are lower or a customer pays slowly, and include every existing repayment.
Contract concentration
If one principal contractor drives most revenue, lenders will ask what happens if that relationship changes or the contract is terminated.
Uncertain pipeline
Separate signed orders from tenders and framework places. Unbilled or prospective work is not the same as revenue.
Stage the investment
Opening a depot in phases, or recruiting as call-offs arrive, can reduce how much you need to borrow at once.
Costs and risks to weigh honestly
- Personal guarantees can make directors personally liable for the debt.
- Secured borrowing can put property or other assets at risk.
- Repayments start on schedule even if a contract is delayed or terminated.
- Invoice finance is an alternative only against eligible issued invoices to business customers; it is not guaranteed funding against unbilled contracts.
- Rates, fees, security requirements and early repayment terms depend on the lender and agreement.
Sorbus Finance is a broker, not a lender, and works with a selected panel of lenders rather than the whole market. Costs, deposits and any guarantee or security depend on the proposal and agreement. Ask for a written breakdown of lender and any broker fees. VAT and tax treatment depend on the structure and your business circumstances; speak to your accountant.

hello@sorbusfinance.co.ukFrequently asked questions
Can a business loan fund a new depot and recruitment?+
Potentially, subject to lender assessment and an affordable repayment plan. Depot set-up, recruitment, training and mobilisation can be considered as expansion costs. Some identifiable depot equipment may also be eligible for asset finance, so separate the cost categories before applying.
Will I need a personal guarantee?+
Often. Many lenders ask directors for personal guarantees on business loans, including unsecured ones. Requirements depend on the lender and the proposal.
Can I borrow against a contract I have just won?+
Lenders consider contracts as evidence, but unbilled or future work does not guarantee funding. Once invoices are issued to business customers, invoice finance may be an option for eligible invoices.
Should I fund vans and signals with the same loan?+
Compare both approaches rather than assuming one is always best. Asset finance may suit identifiable vehicles and signal equipment, while a business loan can cover wider expansion costs. Compare total cost, security, ownership and the combined repayments before deciding.
What do lenders want in a cash forecast?+
A realistic base case and a downside case covering delays, lower volumes or slow payment, with all current repayments included.
Is there an alternative to borrowing everything at once?+
Staging investment, such as phasing a depot or recruiting as call-offs arrive, can reduce borrowing. Invoice finance against eligible issued invoices is another option to discuss.
