Vans, tippers and support vehicles
Traffic management vehicle finance
Replace or add TM-spec vans, tippers and dropsides, and where a lender accepts them, cone-laying, support and impact-protection vehicles. We help you structure the base vehicle and its conversion so the finance reflects what is really on the road.
Vehicles commonly considered
Lender appetite depends on the vehicle, its resale market and the converter. Mainstream vans and tippers are widely understood. Specialist vehicles such as impact-protection units have a narrower resale market, so fewer lenders may consider them and terms can differ.
- TM-spec panel vans
- Tippers and dropsides
- Crew cab support vehicles
- Cone-laying vehicles, where accepted
- Impact-protection vehicles, where accepted
- Replacement and additional fleet
Financing traffic management spec vehicles and conversions
Ask your supplier for an itemised quote: the base chassis or van, then each conversion element such as beacons, conspicuity markings, storage, sign racks and lighting. Lenders value the vehicle and the fit-out differently, and some fit-out may hold little resale value on its own.
Confirm who owns the conversion and when. If a converter requires stage payments before delivery, raise it at the start, because many lenders pay only on completion. If you plan to modify a vehicle that is already financed, get the lender's consent first.
Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual covers temporary traffic management design and operations. It is not a universal vehicle product certificate, and a supplier conformity claim does not mean automatic finance approval. Check the vehicle specification, conversion and intended use with the supplier and appropriate competent advisers against current applicable requirements.
Decisions to make before you apply
Replacement or expansion?
Replacement often swaps one commitment for another. Expansion adds a new repayment, so lenders will want to see the work that the extra vehicle will serve.
Payload after conversion
Racks, storage and equipment reduce usable payload. Check the converted vehicle still carries what crews need legally before you commit.
New or used
Used vehicles can cost less but lenders consider age, mileage, valuation, service history and whether any existing finance must be settled first.
Term versus useful life
The agreement should end while the vehicle still has working life. Heavy daily use and harsh conditions shorten it.
Costs and risks to weigh honestly
- Conversion costs may not hold their value, so the lender may finance less of them or ask for a larger deposit.
- Maintenance, tyres, beacons and servicing are not necessarily included and continue throughout the term.
- Insurance for specialist vehicles and drivers can be significant and is your responsibility.
- Hire purchase ownership passes only after all required payments and any option fee; a finance lease has no automatic ownership.
- Guarantees, security, fees and VAT treatment depend on the lender and agreement; check VAT with your accountant.
Sorbus Finance is a broker, not a lender, and works with a selected panel of lenders rather than the whole market. Costs, deposits and any guarantee or security depend on the proposal and agreement. Ask for a written breakdown of lender and any broker fees. VAT and tax treatment depend on the structure and your business circumstances; speak to your accountant.

hello@sorbusfinance.co.ukFrequently asked questions
Can I finance the conversion as well as the van?+
Often, subject to lender assessment. An itemised quote helps the lender value the base vehicle and each conversion element. Some fit-out may hold little resale value, which can affect how much is financed.
Does a Chapter 8 compliant vehicle guarantee approval?+
No. Chapter 8 is guidance for working on roads, not a universal product certificate or a lending decision. Lenders assess the business, the vehicle and its value separately.
Will finance make my vehicle compliant or road legal?+
No. Finance pays for the vehicle. Compliance, roadworthiness and suitability for each job remain with the converter, operator and competent designer under current applicable guidance.
Can lenders fund impact-protection or cone-laying vehicles?+
Some may, where they accept the vehicle and converter. The resale market is narrower, so fewer lenders may consider them and terms can differ.
My converter wants stage payments. Is that a problem?+
It can be. Many lenders pay only on delivery. Tell us at the start so we can look for a lender whose process suits the build, or plan how you would fund deposits.
Can I add equipment to a vehicle already on finance?+
Get lender consent before modifying a financed vehicle. The lender owns it during the agreement, and unauthorised changes can breach the terms.
