Collection fleet

Waste collection vehicle finance for skip, hook and refuse vehicles

A collection vehicle is a chassis, a body and a lifting or compaction system that all have to work every day. When one is off the road, rounds and customers feel it.

Chassis and body: two quotes, one working vehicle

Most collection vehicles start as a chassis from one manufacturer with a body from a specialist builder. A skip loader body, hook loader system or compaction body has its own lead time, specification and price. Lenders will usually want to see both clearly, and some will consider the body within the same agreement while others treat it differently.

Check that the body is matched to the chassis: weight distribution, payload once fitted, power take-off and the containers you use. A mismatch can mean reduced payload or a vehicle that cannot do the rounds it was bought for. Ask the body builder and dealer to confirm compatibility in writing.

  • Hook loader systems and roll-on containers
  • Refuse collection vehicles and compaction bodies
  • Bin lifts and weighing systems
  • Cameras, telematics and safety equipment
  • Skips and containers, itemised separately

Downtime, maintenance and spare capacity

A collection vehicle that breaks down affects every customer on its round. Think about how you cover downtime: a spare vehicle, short-term hire or contract-hire arrangement. Maintenance, inspections, tyres and body servicing are usually separate from a finance agreement unless it clearly includes them.

Containers, skips and bins are sometimes funded with vehicles and sometimes separately. There is no universal rule, so itemise them.

New, used or refurbished

Used collection vehicles and re-bodied chassis are common. Lender appetite depends on age, mileage, condition, body type and seller, decided case by case. Refurbishing an existing body or keeping a reliable older vehicle may be cheaper than replacing. If you own vehicles outright, asset refinance may be worth discussing.

Registration and road legality are your responsibility

In England, carrying waste generally requires registration as a waste carrier with the Environment Agency, and other nations have their own systems. Operator licensing, vehicle testing and driver requirements also apply. A finance approval does not confirm any of these.

Decision guidance

Deciding on a collection vehicle

01

Specify the round first

Container types, lift weights, access and daily tonnage should drive the body and chassis choice.

02

Match agreement to contract

If a vehicle serves a single contract, consider what happens if that contract is not renewed.

03

Plan cover for downtime

Budget for spare capacity or hire so repayments are not your only fixed cost while a vehicle is off the road.

04

Price running costs separately

Fuel, tyres, inspections, insurance and body servicing typically sit outside the finance.

Costs and risks to weigh

  • Total repayable is more than the cash price, and body costs add to the amount financed.
  • Missed payments can lead to repossession and claims on any guarantee.
  • Early settlement can involve charges.
  • Maintenance, inspections and insurance are not necessarily included.
  • Contract renewals are not guaranteed.
  • Used and re-bodied vehicles face case-specific lender appetite.

Frequently asked questions

Can a skip loader body be financed with the chassis?+

Some lenders consider both together, others separately. Itemised quotes from the dealer and body builder help either approach.

Can I finance a used refuse collection vehicle?+

Possibly. Lenders assess age, mileage, condition and body type case by case.

Does finance cover maintenance?+

Not necessarily. Unless the agreement says so, maintenance, inspections and repairs are your responsibility.

Do I need a waste carrier registration to get finance?+

Lenders may ask about it, but in any case finance does not provide it. In England, registration is with the Environment Agency; other nations differ.

Can skips and containers be included?+

Sometimes. Treatment varies by lender, so itemise containers separately.

Should I refurbish my existing body instead?+

If the chassis is sound, refurbishing or re-bodying may cost less than a new vehicle. Compare both.
