Environmental services equipment finance for drainage, cleaning and monitoring
Drainage contractors, cleaning specialists and monitoring or remediation firms buy equipment for service work, not rounds. That changes how utilisation, income and risk should be weighed.

Different from a collection fleet
A collection vehicle earns on a predictable round. Environmental service equipment earns per job: emergency drainage call-outs, planned maintenance, surveys, tank cleaning or remediation projects. Utilisation can be lumpy, and some equipment is specialised enough that only certain jobs justify it.
Look at your work mix. A combination unit used daily on planned maintenance contracts is a different proposition from a specialist instrument used on occasional projects. Lenders will usually want to understand that mix.
- Van-pack and trailer jetters
- Combination and vacuum tankers
- CCTV drain survey and lining equipment
- Industrial cleaning and pressure washing
- Environmental monitoring instruments
- Remediation and site investigation equipment
Vehicle, body, equipment and software
A tanker or jetting vehicle combines a chassis, a tank or body, pumps and controls. A survey van includes cameras, crawlers and reporting software. Monitoring kit may involve data subscriptions. Ask suppliers to itemise each part, including training and calibration. Lenders differ on software, subscriptions and training; there is no universal rule.
Capability and authorisation are separate
Owning equipment does not mean a business is qualified or authorised to handle particular materials. Work involving hazardous waste, asbestos or contaminated land carries its own regulatory requirements, and Sorbus Finance does not assess or confirm those capabilities. Transporting waste in England generally requires waste carrier registration, and some activities need permits or exemptions; other UK nations differ.
Hire, subcontract or buy
For occasional specialist work, hiring equipment or subcontracting may cost less than buying. For equipment used most days, ownership through hire purchase or a lease may suit. Maintenance, calibration and insurance are generally separate from finance.
Before funding service equipment
Check utilisation by job type
Estimate how many days a month the equipment will earn, based on actual work rather than hopes.
Itemise software and calibration
These may be treated differently by lenders and have ongoing costs.
Confirm authorisations first
Make sure your team and business are authorised and competent for the work the equipment supports.
Compare hire and subcontracting
Specialist kit used occasionally is often better hired.
Costs and risks to weigh
- Total repayable exceeds the cash price.
- Repossession and guarantee claims are possible on missed payments.
- Early settlement may carry charges.
- Maintenance, calibration, subscriptions and insurance are not necessarily included.
- Call-out and project income can be uneven.
- Specialist and used equipment faces case-specific lender appetite.
Sorbus Finance is a broker, not a lender, and works with a selected panel of lenders rather than the whole market. Any offer, cost, deposit, security or guarantee requirement depends on the lender's assessment and the agreement itself. Ask for a written breakdown of lender charges and any broker fee. VAT and tax treatment depend on your business circumstances and structure; take advice from your accountant.

hello@sorbusfinance.co.ukFrequently asked questions
Can I finance a jetting unit or tanker?+
These are commonly considered for asset finance. Terms depend on the lender, asset and your business.
Is environmental equipment treated like a waste collection vehicle?+
Not necessarily. Lenders look at how the equipment earns money, which for service work is usually different from a collection round.
Can survey software be included?+
Sometimes. Software and subscriptions are treated differently by different lenders, so itemise them.
Does owning equipment allow me to handle hazardous waste?+
No. Handling particular materials has its own regulatory requirements. Finance does not confirm capability or authorisation.
Should I hire specialist monitoring equipment instead?+
If it is used occasionally, hire may be cheaper. Compare against expected utilisation.
Is calibration covered by the finance?+
Not usually unless the agreement says so. Budget for calibration and servicing separately.
